Spirits arise from the toxic smoke of First World electronic trash dumped in the developing world. A boy lured by an internet predator, a suicidal stockbroker, a heavy metal televangelist — these are a few of the ghosts haunting a woman who melts down computer components to retrieve precious metals for pennies a day.

With music inspired by Brian Eno and David Byrne’s seminal recording My Life in the Bush of Ghosts, Theatre Conspiracy delves into the fallout of digital culture. Electronic band No Luck Club performs along with live video mixes by Candelario Andrade as dancer/actor Tara Cheyenne Friedenberg creates multiple roles to conjure a ghostworld that is a physical, visual, sonic feast for the senses.

The Autonomy Complex
~ a video trilogy ~

Flick Harrison’s video trilogy is a Canadian nationalist sitcom, an international socialist documentary, and a personal anarchist experiment. Together they form a sweeping picture of political complexity and the tricky balance between freedom and equality: a propaganda of confusion.

Freeworld is set in the year 2023 after Canada is annexed by the USA. Hiroko Doko, arrested for fleeing the draft, is sent into the wilderness with Hedwing, a determined slacker, to capture a loony robot.

Camels Turbans Guns is a documentary made in Pakistan in 1998, just after the mutual nuclear-test showdown with India. It explores the tribal, stone-hut lifestyle of the Baluchi nomads (embroiled today in an armed uprising). Still fiercely independent, they face an encroaching triple-threat of organized Islam, foreign aid and American military
interest.

Based on a short story by DM Fraser, Marie Tyrell is an experimental drama about an activist on death row, told through her lover’s songs, her teenage diaries, and her prison psych report. Also an interactive documentary, it allows an interrogation the politics and the film’s own production. With original footage of Noam Chomsky, Svend Robinson, Scott Ritter, the Woodwards squat, Larry Campbell, and Stephen Osbourne.

This is to let you know about the VANCOUVER PREMIERE screening of MARIE TYRELL, my latest production. All the info is below.

Check the website for images, trailer and so on…

1974 meets 2006: Underground Vancouver filmmaker Flick Harrison
adapts D.M. Fraser’s tour de force, Marie Tyrell

Marie Tyrell is a humanizing portrait of a woman on death row, from inquisitive teen to uncompromising revolutionary leader. Like the 1974 short story by legendary local author D.M Fraser, Harrison weaves multiple perspectives, splintered time and forceful poetic language into a startling examination of the politics of dissent.

*BEST NARRATIVE FILM – Northwest Film and Video Fest*

Mixing painterly compositions, traditional narrative, and a richly layered bombardment of symbols and imagery, Marie Tyrell hijacks the aesthetics of high-art and hostage-video, of indymedia and indiewood.

“This film really knocked me out; it’s a great story, and the style is appropriately rad.” – Sam Green, Director, The Weather Underground

Interactive DVD: Buttons in the video can also “interrogate” the narrative, and the politics of the film’s production, by calling up documentary segments: for instance, an interview with Erik Paulsson, who sat on a BC Arts funding jury which rejected Marie Tyrell. Including original footage of Noam Chomsky, Svend Robinson, Larry Campbell, the Woodwards Squat, and antiwar protests. After screening the video, the Cinematic Salon will see and discuss the project’s interactive elements.

“…Psychedelic polemic… recalls the whole spectrum of 1970s political energy…” – Geist Magazine

**************************************************************************************************
Cineworks Independent Filmmakers Society and Spartacus Books present: Film Interactive: a Cinematic Salon with Flick Harrison Wednesday, March 1, 2006 – 7pm At Spartacus Books, 319 West Hastings – admission by donation Vancouver’s premiere screening of Marie Tyrell, a short film and interactive video based on a short story by D.M. Fraser Followed by conversation with the filmmaker and Camille Baker, artist and interactive media instructor
***************************************************************************************************

Rare Screening: Premiered at Portland’s Northwest Film and Video Fest in November, 2004 – and awarded Best Narrative Film – Marie Tyrell has since been passed hand to hand samizdat-style. In the days since the 2003 closure of micro cinema the Blinding Light, Vancouver has been without a venue to exhibit, and therefore foster, the work of local, non-mainstream film artists.

“Films by Flick promise to provoke a range of reactions, from simple disgust to something as noble as social enlightenment.” – Katherine Monk, Vancouver Sun

Marie Tyrell was produced with the assistance of the Canada Council for the Arts.
